Marc Minkowski conducts Schubert's Symphony No.8 'The Great'

Les Musiciens du Louvre, Marc Minkowski (conductor)

Franz Schubert
Symphony no. 8 in C Major ''The Great'' D.944

Recorded at the Vienna Konzerthaus in 2012

Founded in 1982 by Marc Minkowski, Les Musiciens du Louvre Grenoble champion the performance of Baroque, Classical and Romantic works on period instruments. Over the past thirty years, the orchestra has made its mark with performances of Handel, Purcell and Rameau, along with Haydn and Mozart, and more recently Bach and Schubert. They have also established a reputation for their performances of nineteenth century French music: Berlioz ('Les Nuits d'été', 'Harold en Italie'), Bizet ('L'Arlésienne'), Massenet ('Cendrillon')...
Among their recent successes: Handel's 'Alcina' at the Vienna opera, Mozart's 'Idomeneo' at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, the Mozartwoche and the Musikfestbremen where the orchestra has been appearing regularly since 1995. In 2012, on its thirtieth birthday, the orchestra was invited to the Berlin Opera for 'Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno' by Handel. After a recording of the complete Schubert Symphonies in Vienna for the label Naïve , they are now on a European tour with Bach's St Matthew Passion.
